Taxpayers want to know where their money is going, especially when it comes to the education system of their town. Not every taxpayer has children or even a family member in the education system of a town that they pay their taxes to. If I was one of these taxpayers without a tie to the school system, I would be highly concerned about how my money is being spent and if it being spent for the right reasons. The taxpaying public should be allowed to have a voice in the education system of their community when it comes to the teacher’s salaries that their money is paying for.
The schools could start to issue teacher and school progress reports to the taxpayers in the community so that they would be informed of what is going on in the school. These progress reports could include the statistics of the standardized tests that the school systems perform throughout the year as well as updates about certain teachers and their accomplishments. This is a way so that the taxpayers know what is going on in the school systems. These newsletters would provide the public with valuable information about the teachers and the education system that their money goes towards.
One idea that could be put in place for the taxpayers to be more involved in the school system is to create a council or focus group in the school so that their input could be accounted for with how things are going in the school. Parents, for instance, may notice more than what the school administrators are noticing with their children. A focus group could be a way so that the school can hear direct feedback from the parents about how things are going with the children.
The taxpayer’s money goes toward a teacher’s salary. Therefore, the taxpayers need to informed and updated on how the teachers are doing. The school systems need to be able to update the people of the community and I think newsletters and focus groups could provide this communication.
