  1. Laura your lesson was great. The use of different versions of Rapunzel to illustrate Theme and how the same basic story can have different themes depending on what was stressed by the author was interesting. The only thing that I might change is letting the whole class see both story version so that they can see the differences not just in the discussion that happened later. I think it could have added more to the discussion. Overall very well presented and informative.

Laura – great lesson on literary themes. I enjoyed reading about the brothers Grimm and comparing the two early versions of Rapunzel. It was interesting to see how much the story has changed and how different the contemporary rendition is. For the record, I liked the oldest one, from 1812, the best because it is the simplest. You might want to give students clues about what to look for while reading because I did not find any themes upon first reading. I know you wrote questions on the board but I did not find them helpful in identifying themes. You did a great job though, and through the discussion the themes became clear to me. Good lesson!

  3. Laura - as usual the kids and I loved your lesson. It was a great idea to use a few versions of the same story and find different themes in each. I can't really think of much to improve here. Perhaps further discussion on how to locate themes in stories? Some students may struggle with that. Overall, great lesson, fun and useful!
